Carbon steel is a composite of two elements - iron and carbon. Though small quantities of other elements are usually present, they don't impact the properties. Higher amounts of carbon enhance the toughness and strength of the steel. However, this increase in carbon content makes welding and conductivity more difficult. High carbon steel is any steel with between .55 to .99% carbon and between .3 to .9% manganese. Cold rolling and annealing of high carbon steel strips can improve the surface finish and achieve tighter tolerances. This steel can be shaped to form bending and twisting parts, and it has a maximum hardness of 550 Vickers. Cold-rolled high carbon steel strips are ideal for producing safety belts, horns, chains, lock sets, disk and clutch plates, washers, thorn nuts, spring bolts.
